Q:

Dear 100 Hour Board,

I have to keep pinching myself to make sure this is real but I think Sega finally struck it rich with this by the fans, for the fans approach, thanks in no small part to Christian Whitehead, Simon Thomley, Tee Lopes and, of course, Aaron Webber. (No more Sonic cycle... until Sonic Forces, that is. *shudders*) The news and reviews leave no room for doubt on that point. However, I am an avid fan in the online community and I am looking for some additional insight on the ground from average and casual gamers to get a more organic feel for how well this is holding up. On a scale of 1 to 10 and with no shortage of verbosity, how much of a comeback is Sonic Mania for the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise to you?

A:

Dear Original,

I played Sonic Mania for about a half hour, and it seemed pretty good. I know it's got great reviews. It's a game in the style of classic Sonic, and it seems well-thought out and well-executed. Maybe someday I'll actually buy the game.

I don't know why, but I'm not actually that into the side-scrolling platformers like classic Sonic. My favorite Sonic games were Sonic Heroes and Sonic the Hedgehog (2006). Both games are absolutely ridiculous, but that's the charm. And the gameplay was fun, at least for my teenage self. My siblings and I still shout random Silver lines at each other, like "It's no use!" or "You're the Iblis trigger!" Dialogue doesn't get much better than that.

How much of a comeback is Sonic Mania? I say 7 out of 10. It's a game that's actually pleased most Sonic fans, which gives a lot of hope for the future of the franchise. However, it was a relatively small project, and it may or may not impact the larger games. We'll see. Personally, I'm looking forward to Sonic Forces. I think it's likely that most people will be disappointed, because that's just how it goes with Sonic. As for myself, I'm often easy to please, and I think there's a chance I'll enjoy it, regardless of the popular opinion.
