Q:

Dear 100 Hour Board,

Are there any atheist students at BYU that BYU knows about? Does BYU kick someone out if they go from being a Mormon to an atheist? Just a hypothetical question of course.

A: Dear Soh-crates:

I don't think that BYU keeps official tabs on the denominations of non-LDS students. As for students who become disaffiliated with the church, I actually do have experience with this one, having a friend who decided to go through that process while attending BYU. As long as the student still lives by the Honor Code -- just like non-LDS students that come here -- their academic standing isn't jeopardized even if they have their name removed from church membership records. The only thing that changes is they have to start paying non-LDS tuition. It's sad when it does happen, but the BYU administration has enough sense to know that it's an ecclesiastical matter, not an academic one.
