Q:

Dear 100 Hour Board,

I need help deciding which phone plan to use. I've lived in Japan for most of my life, so I'm not very familiar with American phone plans. So far the best deal I've found is the Sprint Unlimited Plan, but since I'll be texting my family back in Japan and going back to visit every year I'll also need to be able to have data internationally. I was also thinking about the Sprint leasing plan, with the iPhone Forever deal. Do you think it's a good idea? And is Sprint the best option for a college student?

Basically, do you think the Sprint Unlimited Plan and iPhone Forever leasing deal are good ideas for a college student who needs to make frequent international texts?

Thanks,

-I don't understand how phones work

A:

Dear person,

According to Sprint's website, Japan is on the list of countries where you can get free texting and 2G data. I can't tell you for sure that it'll work as expected, since my Verizon plan was supposed to give me free service while I was in Canada, and that didn't go according to plan. But Sprint is supposed to work in Japan.

As far as texting your family in Japan, you could always just use some other online messaging service, like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, or Allo, even if texting your family normally doesn't work.

I wouldn't get an iPhone personally, but that's because I prefer Android. I don't think that the iPhone Forever plan is any worse than any other smartphone leasing or payment program offered by any cellular carrier. If you want an iPhone and Sprint Unlimited looks like the best deal for your expected cellular usage, the iPhone Forever is probably a good deal.
