Q:

Dear 100 Hour Board,

Do you think it's worth getting a ROC Pass? It seems that going to games (especially during football season) is a really big part of BYU culture, but $150 feels like quite a bit of money. I'm not really all that into sports, but I do want to experience BYU culture and this seems like a great way to do it. But do you think $150 is really worth it? How often did you use your ROC Passes in your freshman year (if you even purchased one)?

Thanks,

-A Frugal Thrill Seeker

A:

Dear FTS,

I don't think it's worth it to get a ROC pass, especially if you aren't really into sports. You're right that it's a big part of BYU culture to go to all the football games, but rooting for a team that isn't even good is a pretty stupid part of BYU culture, probably second only to BYU dating culture.

Dear AT-ST,

I've really enjoyed having a ROC pass in the past. I think that athletic events are really fun things to do, and there's always one going on. If you're going to the football games it's probably worth it, and even then there's still all the basketball games, volleyball games, baseball games, etc. There are a lot of fun sporting events and I personally think that it's fun to support the student athletes!

However, the pass is still really expensive. There are a lot of people who won't use theirs, and if you're not ashamed of freeloading, you can always borrow somebody's ROC pass. Also it's pretty easy to find a freshman who has a ROC pass their parents bought them and they're usually willing to sell them for cheap. I bought a ROC pass for $20 once!

Keep it real,
Sherpa Dave

Dear Frugal,

I bought one my freshman year and only ended up using it twice. There's lots to do on campus, so unless sports are very much your thing, you'll find yourself doing other things. I went to tons of music events, which I really enjoyed. You can see their calendar here. And keep an eye out for various BYUSA activities. Some of them can be fun.
