Dear 100 Hour Board,
A girl on an LDS mom group I'm in on Facebook is freaking out about eating meat. She watched a couple of documentaries about farm factories on Netflix, and now she doesn't understand how LDS people can eat meat in good conscience knowing how terribly the animals are treated. People shared a bunch of scriptures about God being ok with us eating meat, including D&C 89:12.
Now she wants to know why no one mentioned D&C 89:13 where it says to only use meat in times of cold and famine. I honestly don't really understand what that verse is talking about, so I couldn't help her understand. Do any of you have insight about what that verse is trying to say?

We've come a long way in terms of humane slaughterhouses. Yes, it's not perfect, but it's not what it used to be either.
D&C 49 actually tells us not to forbid people from eating meat. Verses 18-19 state, "And whoso forbiddeth to abstain from meats, that man should not eat the same, is not ordained of God; For, behold, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the air, and that which cometh of the earth, is ordained for the use of man for food and for raiment, and that he might have in abundance." And then verse 21 adds the warning: "And wo be unto man that sheddeth blood or that wasteth flesh and hath no need."
Currently, I'm eating the Paleo diet. I feel so much better on the diet than I used to, which makes me strongly suspect that I'm intolerant or at least sensitive to grains. How does that fit in with grain being "the staff of life?" (D&C 89:14) I don't know. Is it okay to eat a diet that's primarily meat and vegetables when we've been told to use meat "sparingly?" I don't know. All I know is that I've felt strongly impressed for the last two years to find a diet that works for me, and I think I'm finally really getting there.
God has "ordained [meat] for the use of man with thanksgiving." (D&C 89:12) Worrying too much about eating meat doesn't seem like thanksgiving to me. But I agree that care should be taken to not be wasteful.
The world was different two centuries ago. If people ate their livestock when they could have been eating their crops, they would run out of food. That's one possibility for what it means to only use meat in times of cold or famine. Also, sparingly could be talking more about "eat what you kill" than about how much you eat. It says to "use" meat sparingly rather than to "eat" meat sparingly after all.
Of course these are all just my opinions. This is an issue I'm still trying to figure out in my own life.
