Q:

Dear 100 Hour Board,
What is the benefit of a fever when there is no virus or bacteria in such cases as inflammation, and what mechanisms activate the fever in these instances?
- Elizabeth

A: Dearest, Dearest Elizabeth,

So you can legitimately call in sick to work.

A: Dear Lizzie:

Fever occurs whenever your immune system is fighting off a foreign invader of any sort. The immune response sends your hypothalamus -- the metabolism-regulating gland -- into overdrive to produce more white blood cells. As a consequence of increased metabolism, your body temperature rises. A somewhat simplified explanation, but that's the general idea.
