Q:

Dear 100 Hour Board,

What is the up to date dress code standards for BYU Provo? I'll be heading there in the fall and I know things vary from school to school, especially with BYUI, and I was just wondering specifically for Provo what the code is with all the modern updates. For example, Yoga pants. Can you where them? I heard that you can but you have to wear a long shirt to cover your butt. And no flip flops? I heard this was a thing but I'm not sure and it really confuses me if it's true why it is. Then wearing shorts in your dorm that aren't to the knee?

If possible answer in a list format. Thank you!! :)

Dear WM,

The Honor Code is the governing document for the behavior of BYU students, and therefore represents the definitive dress and grooming standards. It stipulates the following for women:

"A clean and well-cared-for appearance should be maintained. Clothing is inappropriate when it is sleeveless, strapless, backless, or revealing; has slits above the knee; or is form fitting. Dresses, skirts, and shorts must be knee-length or longer. Hairstyles should be clean and neat, avoiding extremes in styles or colors. Excessive ear piercing (more than one per ear) and all other body piercing are not acceptable. Shoes should be worn in all public campus areas."

However, the rules as outlined by the Honor Code are rather vague, leaving a lot up to individual interpretation. For instance, I've seen plenty of students at BYU wearing yoga pants without censure, but you could encounter some professors or other staff members who consider them to be "form fitting" and therefore a violation of the Honor Code. I think the chances anyone will reprimand you are slim, but you do run the risk that someone will question you.

Flip-flops are perfectly acceptable footwear.

While the Honor Code does require all shorts to reach the knee, they are only regulating the clothing you wear in public. Within your own dorm you can wear whatever you want to, providing you don't make your roommate uncomfortable, of course. However, I would be a bit more modest in the public areas of the dorm, like the lobby. If you are just running down to the vending machine, then by all means wear your shorts, but if you're meeting friends down there, adhere to the Dress and Grooming Standards.

Good luck at BYU!

Love,

Luciana
