Q:

Dear 100 Hour Board,

Why is the SWKT so tall? In my limited knowledge, I would think building the tower so tall would be more expensive than building it out a bit. Is there a story behind it? Also, how many levels is it again?

A:

Dear you,

This article, provided by Sherpa Dave, doesn't directly address your question, but it does mention that when you're dealing with a limited land area, the only option to build is up. BYU Campus is pretty compact and walkable, and my guess is that at the time, it simply wasn't feasible to acquire a large area of land to accommodate the needs that the SWKT would fill. Thus, the only option was to build up. It's not just a matter of cost, but of whether land adjacent to BYU is up for sale in the first place.

The SWKT is twelve floors.
