Q:

Dear 100 Hour Board,

I ride the West route on the Ryde to get to school. It seems that a couple of times a week, we get a short bus rather than the usual large buses. When this happens, the amount of people crammed in is really unsafe and uncomfortable. It's clear that the short bus is not large enough to accommodate the number of people on the West route. I haven't noticed the short bus being assigned to any other route. My question is, why does the West route get assigned this bus when it clearly doesn't accommodate the number of people on the West route? I don't imagine it being a shortage of buses because there are days when I notice every route has a large bus.

Sincerely,

Tired of Being a Sardine

A:

Dear Sardine,

I don't think the West bus is being singled out; I've been on a short bus running the Joaquin/South route a few times. I can't say I've ever had an experience like yours, though, where the short bus was so crowded that it felt unsafe. That's happened to me on the long bus, but whenever I've been on the short it's been because that time of day was less busy and so they didn't need as big of a bus.

And, when it does happen, I think it's very possible that it could be due to a shortage of buses. A while ago the long bus for the J/S route was broken and we had the short bus all day while it was being repaired. Just this morning the King Henry bus was belching out a lot of smoke, so I wouldn't be surprised if they end up getting a short bus as well.

Like death, the short bus comes for us all some day.

P.S. If any other readers have other experiences with the West bus, now would be a good time to speak up.

Dear person,

I can tell you that this semester the Branbury bus has been unsafely stuffed even with a long bus, so I'm guessing the short bus gets assigned to the West route because other routes have more people. Poor lil' bus. No one likes him and he's just doing the best he knows how.
