Q:

Dear 100 Hour Board,

Why is the water at Heritage Halls so bad? Is it like that all around BYU? Is it a Provo issue? I dealt with the water at first, but now I have to buy water bottles because I cannot drink the water without wanting to puke. Friends also from out of state notice it too. Even one of my roommates, who is from Utah, buys water bottles now. Someone said "it's just the minerals", but I'm not buying that. So what's the deal?

A:

Dear Tantor,

I've never gotten used to the water in Provo. It's probably just minerals, but it just doesn't taste right. I use a water filter, which works for me. It actually makes water a lot more pleasant to drink, and less scratchy on the throat.

Good luck!

Dear coyaique,

I am from Utah, and personally think Utah water—including Provo water—tastes a lot better than most other places where I have had water (**cough cough Florida cough**). So who is right? You, from out of state, or me, a local?

In many cases, personal preferences for drinking water and bathing (soft water, hard water, additional differing mineral profiles) are just that: personal preferences largely based on what we consider "normal" and what we drank growing up.

Suerte,
