Q:

Dear 100 Hour Board,

Why do dogs enjoy hanging their heads out of car windows? Is there something genetically implanted? What? Do they just enjoy the air? Why? Or is there more to it? Speculation is welcome, if no solid answer is found.

A:

Dear Buddy,

Dogs do just enjoy the air. Specifically, they enjoy the smells contained in the air. Dogs have far more olfactory receptors ("scent cells") than humans, and the fast-flowing jet of air outside a car offers a plethora of smells to be enjoyed.

But maybe it's just the smell of sweet, sweet freedom.
