Q:

Dear 100 Hour Board,

Where do the different Disney princess movies take place? Obviously Belle is in France, Pocohontas is in Virginia, Jasmine is in Arabia and Tiana is in New Orleans, but what about the others? Where do Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Little Mermaid, and Tangled take place?

-Captain Thor America

A:

Dear Captain Thor Guy,

Based on the castles, Germany.

A:

Dear Captain Thor America,

These fairy tales all began as stories written by European authors. Based on the idea that many authors write stories set in their native land, I'd guess the nationality of the author would determine where the story took place. If this assumption is true, and assuming that the Disney people were faithful to the original stories (which isn't completely true, but we'll go with it), then here's where the movies took place:

Snow White: Germany

Cinderella: France

Sleeping Beauty: France (if the original author was Perrault), Germany (if the original authors were the Grimms), or Italy (if the original author was Basile)

The Little Mermaid: Denmark

Rapunzel: Germany

I wonder if there are any clues in the movies that would confirm or refute these settings? I wish I owned the movies and had the time to watch them all in time for this question, but alas, I do not. Are there any huge Disney fans among our readers that want to take on the task?

Cinderella definitely takes place in France, because when Disneyland redid their "it's a small world" ride to add Disney characters into the various countries/continents/regions you float through, Cinderella, Jacques, and Gus are in France. Other characters added include:

Peter Pan and Tinkerbell flying over England
Alice and the White Rabbit on a chessboard in England
Pinocchio and Jiminy Cricket in Italy
Abu in the Middle East/Arabia with Jasmine and Aladdin flying on the magic carpet above
Mulan and Mushu in China
Simba, Pumbaa, and Timon in Africa
The Three Caballeros (Donald Duck, Jose Carioca, and Panchito) in Mexico
Ariel and Flounder under the sea before you reach Polynesia/Hawaii
Marlin and Dory under the sea before you reach Polynesia/Hawaii
Lilo and Stitch in Hawaii
Jessie, Woody, and Bullseye in the western US

Just some food for thought.
