It's using the work fast to refer to a period of time where you do not eat. The word has a religious signifigance for members of the LDS church, but not for most of the rest of the world (AFAIK). When you go to bed, you are fasting, because you are not eating. When you wake up and eat, you are breaking said fast, and therefore, you are having breakfast.
