Q:

Dear 100 Hour Board,

When not hosting SportsCenter, I enjoy studying LDS doctrine and correcting the BYU 100 hour board.

In response to a recent question on hypnosis, it just so happens that the church DOES have an official position. Which is unusual, because the church takes an "official" position on very few things.
The following is from the 1998 Church Handbook of Instructions Book 1, page 155 -

Hypnosis
The use of hypnosis under competent, professional medical supervision for the treatment of diseases or mental disorders is a medical question to be determined by competent medical authorities. Members should not participate in hypnosis for purposes of demonstration or entertainment.

However, since the church gives this book only to leaders and since you never hear leaders speak of this topic in public, no one can blame members of the church for not knowing better.

A: Dear Rich,

Thanks for the clarification.
