Dear 100 Hour Board,

Not that I'm worried about my car needing to go on the Atkin's Diet or something, but I was just wondering how many calories are in gasoline (regular unleaded, 87 octane). How about it; any reliable answers?

A: Dear MacG:

Combustion of 1 kg of gasoline releases about 48 megajoules of energy. That's 11,500 kilocalories (which is what food is measured in). Drinking a liter of gasoline, assuming that you could oxidize it entirely without it killing you, would give you about five to six days' worth of energy.
