Q:

Dear 100 Hour Board,

I heard a rumor that you can't get a mission deferment if you are on academic probation. Is that true? One one hand, BYU would be holding a spot for a student who was doing quite poorly. But at the same time, BYU is obviously an advocate of missionary work and probably doesn't want to make prospective missionaries wait a semester to bring their GPAs up above a 2.0.

A: Dear Jassa,

It turns out you have been slightly misinformed. One of the requirements for mission deferment in BYU's policy states that in order to defer, a prospective missionary, "Must not be on academic suspension nor dismissal from BYU." So, if a student is just on probation, they can receive mission deferment.
