Look out for the future, because you never know what it might bring…
Question #19909 posted on 05/08/2003 midnight

Dear 100 Hour Board,
What is the purpose behind the strange names given to things and people when the original revelations we now know as the Doctrine and Covenants were given to Joseph Smith? For instance:
Joseph Smith - Gazelam or Baurak Ale
Newel K. Whitney - Ahashdah
Mercantile Establishment - Ozondah
Cainhannoch - New York
- Zombre

A: Dear Zombre,
Have you read the Doctrine and Covenants? It seems strange to me that you should know what the code names placed in the sections were and what they stood for, but not know why they were used. This is especially surprising because it is stated explicitly in the heading to Section 78. Such being the case, I will not quote the reason to you, because otherwise you won't get out your D&C and look it up for yourself. In the future, I invite you to study the scriptures first, then move on to other items of interest. You may be surprised to find how often the scriptures have the answer.
