Q:

Dear 100 Hour Board,
What percentage of Americans believe in God?
- GFA

A: Dear GFA,
There is a lot of conflicting information out there, so it is hard to tell. I will try to use only reliable sources, since practically every denomination out there has done its own study and came up with different numbers. The best poll of 2002 was a USA Today/Gallup Poll in January of that year. It found that about 50% of adults in America considered themselves religious and 33% considered themselves "spiritual but not religious." About 10% of Americans considered themselves to be neither spiritual nor religious. Another Gallup Poll in 1998 said that 9 out of 10 Americans believed in a personal God. That seems great, but modern interpretation of diety isn't what it used to be. People often believe in vague ideas or forces that most of mainstream Christianity would not consider "God." I found several sources that said that about 50% of adults considered themselves Christian, and about 43% attend a church regularly.
